In Latin, māter means mother / source.
Māter derives from the Indo-European root world mehter (mother), and has the same etymology as the English world mother.
The original meaning of the Latin world materia is “tree trunk.”
The trunk is thought to be the “womb” of life, and materia originates from the world māter.
ラテン語で(母・源)の意。印欧語根 mehter(母)が語源、mother と同じ語源をもつ。
